My 2000 ford f-150 fuel Tank Fell Out Of The Vehicle This Past June 2010. The Vehicle Was Purchased New And Was Dealer Under Coated To Prevent Rusting. The Tank At The Time Was Full Of fuel And Was Within Minutes Of Having Been Traveling Down The Freeway. The Vehicle Was Parked For A Short Period Of Time Before The fuel Tank Fell To The Ground. On Inspection The Forward Strap Was Missing On The Tank Was On The Ground Front First. If This Would Have Happened While Driving On The Freeway It Would Have Surely Ended In A Fire. *tr

I Have A 2000 ford f-150 4×4. I Was Driving On St Rt 13 In New Lexington Ohio And Had The Gas Tank Holding Straps Rust Off And Had The Gas Tank Fall Off. My Truck Seemed To Be In Ok Shape On The Outside. This Led Me To Check Out The Rest Of The Truck More And Then I Have Also Found That The Frame, Cab Corners And Lots Of Other Parts Are Rusting Completely. I Have Since Then Replaced The Straps With New Ones From ford. As For The Rest Of The Truck The Rust Is Getting Worse By The Day I Have Used Rust Stoppers And Cleaned As Much Off As I Could. I Still Have A Bank Note So I Have To Drive It. I Hope And Pray That I Am Not In Any Accidents For I Believe The Truck Would Suffer Great Damage Due To The Rust!!! *tr

After I Filled Up With Gas, I Smelled Gas. After This Happened A Couple Of Times, I Noticed Gas Dripping From The Tank. Upon Inspection, I Noticed That The Leak Was Near The Filler Neck, But The Root Cause Was That One Of The Tank Straps Was Completely Rusted Away, The Other Is Severely Corroded; The Leak At The Neck Is Because The Weight Of The Tank Is Being Supported By The Neck. I See That Several Dozen Cases Have Occurred Where The Tank Has Fallen Out Of The Trucks Going Down The Road, And The “crack Staff” At Nhtsa Has Been “studying” This Since September To See If This Is A “safety Concern”, But They Are Either Too Inept, Too Corrupt, Or Too Lazy To Do Their Jobs. This Is The Same Lack Of Concern For American Consumers That Allowed People To Die From The Toyota Sudden Acceleration Issue. Take You R Time Guys, You Are Only Playing Roulette With Human Lives!!!!! I Will Quote [xxx] “shame On Nhtsa For Not Doing Your Job.” I Hope The New Chairs Of Energy And Commerce And Oversight And Reform Have More Respect For Human Life Than The Last Ones. If So, Nhtsa May Be Compelled To Do Its Job! Information Redacted Pursuant To The Freedom Of Information Act (foia), 5 U.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Approximately (5:45 Pm) On Mon.,1- 24-11. I Was Coming Home Had fueled Up My Truck (then At 3/4s Full) For Week When I Noticed A Scraping/dragging Sound Coming From Rear Of The Truck Just After Crossing A Double Rr-track On A Paved Two Lane Road. Nowhere To Pull Over After A Wet Snowfall On Narrow Shoulder, I Put On 4-ways And Crept To The Nearest Driveway At A Drugstore. I Exited Truck To Check Out The Noise, To My Shock I Saw My Forward End Of fuel Tank Was On The Ground And Spilling fuel. I Called 911, Police And Fire (equipped To Stabilize The fuel Spill) And A Tow Company Were Sent To Assist. A Report Was Made By The Local Police. The Truck Was Then Taken By My Request To The ford Dealership Where It Had Been Purchased New. Next Day: The Dealership Quoted An Astronomical Price For Replacement Of Damaged Parts & Labor (1600-2000). After Research Had The Truck Towed To Another Facility For The Repairs Which Were Completed The Same Week By That Thu. Evening. I Do Have The Defective Parts In My Possession (fuel Tank Straps). This Was Out Of Pocket (except For The Original Tow; Insurance Reimbursed 50.) Had To Barrow And Refuel A Vehicle As Well To Get To Work. Due To Some ford Motor Co. Connections Through My Business Clients I Have Received A Phone Call From Their Corporate Offices For Which I Had A 30 Min. Conversation With A Rep. Who Needed A Week To Research My Verbal Complaint. This Person Did Try To Call Me Back On Thu.2-10-11 But I Was Not Available (due To My Work Hours). In The First Phone Call I Spoke Of My Knowledge Of ford Receiving A Letter From (odi) Back In 9-24-10. If They Knew Why Wasn’t This Problem Checked If My Truck Had Been In & Out Of A ford Service Facility The Last 3 Mo.’s Of 2010. I Made It Known That I Would Be Filing A Complaint With Your Administration And I Would Be Warning Everyone I Know For Fear That This Could Happen To Others. I Also Told Them That I Hoped That ford Motor Co. Would Issue A Recall. *tr Updated 08/01/11 *bf Updated 08/02/11

I Was Driving My ford F150 Pick Up Truck And Heard Something Like I Dropped An Exhaust Pipe. Luckily I Was Driving Slowly About 20-25 Mph. I Stopped And Got Out To See What Had Happened. My Gas Tank That I Had Just Filled The Other Day Fell Off. Both Straps Broke And I Was Dragging The Tank On The Ground. I Had It Towed To My House For Repair. After Noticing That The fuel Fill Pipe Had Rusted Off Near The Tank And Both Straps Had Failed. I Decided It Was To Much For Myself To Repair. I Believe I Need A New Gas Tank And New Straps. fuel Was Thrown Up Under My Truck. I Contacted ford But They Were Of Little Help. Probably Not Going To Buy Another One. Pulling Into A Parking Space, I Heard A Loud Bang And A Dragging Sound. I Got Out Of My Vehicle To See What I Had Backed Into, But Couldn’t Seen Anything. I Went To Get Back Into My Vehicle And Heard Someone Say, “something Is Hanging Under Your Truck”. When I Got Out And Looked, I Saw The Gas Tank Laying On The Ground. Upon Inspection, Both Straps Had Broken And The fuel Lines Were The Only Thing Holding It To The Truck. This Occurred Only Once So Far. The Truck Is A 2000 F150 With 150,000 Miles On It. I Replaced The Two Straps After Purchasing Them From A Dealer. I Was Shocked To See That A 24 Gallon Tank Was Held Up By Two Small Metal Straps Attached To The Frame By A Bolt On One Side, And A Twist Lock (if You Can Call It That) On The Other. I Hope ford Has Found A Better Way To Attach These On Their Newer Vehicles, Especially 4-wheel Drive. *tr

When I Looked Under My Truck My Gas Tank Was Dragging On The Ground. The Front Metal Bracket Had Rusted Through And Broken. There Was Gas Leaking From The Tank And The Fire Department Responded. On Friday, July 29, 2011 I Noticed Something Hanging Down Below My 2000 Model Year ford F150 Pickup Truck. Upon Closer Investigation I Discovered That The Dangling Object Was The Remains Of The Front fuel Tank Mounting Strap Which Had Failed Due To Corrosion. The Front Of The fuel Tank Was Drooping Down Four To Six Inches From Its Normal Position And The Tank Was Being Held Only By The Rear Strap. Examination Of The Rear Strap Revealed That It Was Also Severely Rusted. The Following Morning I Purchased New Front And Rear fuel Tank Mounting Straps From My Local ford Dealer’s Parts Department And Installed Them Myself. As A Retired Engineer, I Was Disappointed By How Flimsy These Straps Are And How Their Corrosion Resistance Is Obviously Inadequate To Prevent Failure. That Evening, Saturday, July 31, 2011, There Was A Report On A Local Television Station Of A Hazmat Team Response To An Incident Near Good Hope Road And Us Highway 45 In Milwaukee, Wisconsin In Which The fuel Tank Of A ford F150 Pickup Had Fallen To The Ground Due To Failure Of The fuel Tank Straps. That Led Me To The Discovery That Nhtsa Has Been Investigating Corrosion Failures Of fuel Tank Mounting Straps On F150s. I Believe The Evidence Shows That A Vehicle Safety Defect Is Present In The Design Of These Straps, In That The Design Is Insufficient To Prevent Or Withstand Corrosion Which Could Reasonably Be Expected To Occur During The Normally Expected Lifetime Of The Vehicle. I Strongly Urge That A Mandatory Recall Be Issued Against ford F150 Vehicles And Any Others Using These Or Similarly Inadequate fuel Tank Mounting Straps. *tr

In April 2011, While Driving Our ford F150, Model Year 2000, Along A Country Two-lane Road In A Rural County In Virginia, At Approximately 40 Mph, The Gas Tank Dropped Onto The Road Causing A Large Hole In The Tank And The Loss Of Nearly 3/4 Tank Of Gasoline. I Was Able To Brace The Tank Up With A Rope Long Enough To Get To Our Son’s Home A Short Distance Away And Lucky Enough Not To Run Out Of Gas Until I Pulled Into His Yard. There Was No Injury But Sparks Flew From The Tank After It Dropped Onto The Road. Fortunately There Was No Fire. I Had A Mechanic Replace The Tank And The Strap And Have Had The Truck Back Into The Shop Twice To Repair Leakage And Had To Replace The Neck Assembly As Well. We Were Made Aware Of The Recall On Our Model F150 And Took All Receipts To The Local Dealership. We Were Told That This Truck Was Not Included In The Recall And The Dealer Refused Reimbursement. *kb

ford Has Issued A Recall For Defective fuel Tank Straps That May Corrode And Cause A Potential fuel Leak. I Brought My Truck In For The Recall And Sure Enough My Straps Are Corroded. The Vehicle Is At A ford Dealership And They Will Not Replace The Straps Because The Corroded Straps Have Started To Corrode The Tank. According To The Dealer The Tank Will Begin Leaking If They Replace The Straps. The Dealer Called ford Customer Care And They Would Not Cover The Tank. I Also Called ford And They Refused To Cover The Tank And Also Will Not Replace The Straps Unless I Purchase A Tank From Them To Replace. If My Straps Break I Will Lose My Tank And Potentially Cause A Fire Or Accident To Another Vehicle. The Recall Does Not Currently Address Additional Damage Caused By The Defective Straps. The Damage To My Tank Is A Direct Result Of The Defective Straps And Should Be Covered Under This Recall. I Leave In New England And Am Sure There Are Many Other ford Trucks With The Same Problem. I May Be Possible That If Your Vehicle Is Operated In A High Corrosion Areas For An Extended Period Of Time, One Or Both fuel Tank Straps Could Potentially Fracture. Strap Fracture May Result In The fuel Tank Contacting The Ground. If The fuel Tank Contacts The Ground And Develops A Leak While Driving, There Is A Potential For Fire. The Time ford Estimates For This Repair To Occur Is Erroneous. It Takes Half A Day In The Shop To Determine If The Straps Are In Good Of Bad Shape. Then They Have To Order A Repair Kit. To Do The Actually Repair, Close To A Day In The Shop. I Need My Vehicle For Work And ford Will Not Loan Me One Free Of Charge. *tr
