I Am The Original Owner Of A 2001fordescape Xlt V6, 4 Wheel Drive. My Truck Currently Has 75000 Miles Of Use. I Feel The Incident I Chose To Write About Is A Significant Safety Issue As It Involves A Malfunction Of The Anit-lock Braking System (abs) Which Significantly Reduces Braking Action (on Dry Pavement!) When It Occurs. I Am Also Aware Of At Least Two Other fordescape Owners That Have Experienced The Same Failure. The Failure Causes The Abs To Activate On Dry Pavement, When Absolutely No Slippage Is Occurring At Any Wheel. The Activity Of The Abs System Actually Significantly Reduces Braking Capacity And Causes The Brake Pedal To Go Down Noticeably Further Than Normal When Attempting To Stop. Only A Quick Avoidance Maneuver Allowed Me To Avoid Rear-ending The Car In Front Of Me. Pumping The Brakes Does Not Help Since The Abs Hydraulic Control Module Is Modulating The Brakes At Such A Rate, Pumping The Brake Does Not Produce A Firmer Pedal. I Have Traced The Problem To A Faulty Abs System Rotation Transducer Design On The Front Wheels Of The escape. The Transducer Is Basically A Splined Ring About 8mm Wide. The Ring Is Apparently Friction Fit Onto The Half-shaft Near The Front Cv Joints Just Inside Of The Front Hub Assembly. A Sensor Apparently Picks Up The Peaks Or Valleys In The Splined Ring As It Rotates Past The Sensor To Determine Wheel Rotation Speed. It Is The Splined Ring That Fails, Mine Actually Split Across Its Width Causing It To Loosen And Move Away From The Sensor. This Apparently Causes The Abs System To Operate Erratically And Actually Cause A Significant Reduction In Braking Capacity On Dry Pavement! This Erratic Behavior Will Occur 5-10 Times Before The Abs Controller Determines There Is Something Wrong And Switches Off The Abs System. This Illuminates The Abs Indicator Light On The Instrument Panel And Does Restore Normal Braking Performance. This Cycle Will Repeat Itself Each Time The Truck Is Shut Off And Restarted!!

The Morning Of 2/20/07 I Went Out To Start My 2001fordescape To Go To Work And As I Was Walking Out To The Garage I Saw Smoke Billowing Out Of My Hood. I Ran Over And Popped The Hood And There Was Smoke Coming From My Anti-lock Braking System Electronic Control System. I Pushed The Car Out Of My Garage Fearing A House Fire And A Friend Unhooked My Battery . When The Smoking And Sparking Subsided The Abs Control Box Was Melted And All The Wires Were Burned And Melted. I Called The Dealership To See If There Were Any Recalls At This Time And They Told Me No. I Googled Consumer Reports And Saw An Article That This Was Not An Isolated Incident And That You Were Investigating 8 Other Similar Incidents. It Has Not Been Repaired As It Has Just Happened And Honestly Is Seems To Be Quite Expensive To Remedy. - The Contact Stated That The 2001fordescape Xlt Wires Under The Hood Burned While Sitting In The Garage Of Her Home. She Drove The Vehicle One Hour Prior To The Fire. The Alarms In Her House Warned Her Of The Fire. She Called The Local Fire Department, And They Found No Fire In The House. They Then Checked The Garage And They Smelled Something Burning. The Fireman Opened And Noticed The Wires That Were Burning Under The Hood Of The Vehicle. The Vehicle Was Towed To Town And Country, And They Informed Her That Old Brake Fluid Leaked On The Abs, Which Was The Cause Of The Wires Burning. The Vehicle Was serviced For The Abs Light Coming On, And Off At The Local Firestone, They Replaced The Master Cylinder . The Wires Burned Within 24 Hours Of The Repair. The Town And Country Dealership Gave The Contact A Loaner Vehicle, And She Felt This Was Odd. The Contact Stated That The Dealership Informed Her That It Would Cost $2,416.12 To Repair The Wires And The Abs. Brakes And Steering Failed Once While Driving Down A Curvy Mountain Road, Speed Approx. 25 Mph, Second Failure At Approx 45 Mph On A Straight And Level City Road. Both Times Two Feet Had To Be Used On The Brake Pedal And With Heavy Steering And The Vehicle Was Just Stopped Before Crashing Into Obstacles. No Warning Preceeded The Incidents. Three Dash Warning Lights Came On After. The Dealer Took The Vehicle Back To The Dealership Both Times And The First Time Said Perhaps We Had More Than One Key On The Key Ring In The Ignition Key Hole. This Was Noted As A Potential Cause Of Turning Off The Engine. This Was Not The Case In Either Incident, Only The Ignition Key Was On The Ring. First Incident They Said ford Noted The Heavy Key Posibility And ford Engineering Also Recommended Reprogramming The Computer And A New Mass Air Flow Sensor Was Installed. This Did Not Help As A Few Days Later The Same Failure Occurred Again, Almost Resulting In A Crash. Currently (feb. 23, 2002) The escape Is At The Dealer Now After The Second Near Crash Incident As We Will Not Drive It Anymore. They Say They Are Asking Their Engineering Staff Again What To Do. The Brakes Seemed To Get More Spongy After We Had Driven It Home, So I Called Northstar ford On Monday, April 22, To Have Them Check The Brakes And Correct A Vibration On Tuesday Morning At 8:00. At That Appointment They Worked On Correcting The Vibration But They Didn’t Do Anything About The Brakes. That Afternoon When I Drove The escape Downtown Duluth, When I Stopped At A Red Light On A Hill, I Noticed That With Moderate Pressure I Could Push The Brake Pedal Nearly To The Floor. I Made Another Appointment For Thursday, April 25, To Have Them Wash Off Some Tire Dressing That Had Spattered On The Vehicle. When I Asked Them To Check The Brakes, They Said The Brakes Were Normal And They Wouldn’t Do Anything About The Brakes. So I Gave Them A Paper To Sign That States “the Brakes On Our fordescape Are Functioning Normally Even Though They Are Very ‘spongy.’ Furthermore, When Moderate Pressure Is Applied To The Brake Pedal, The Pedal Goes Nearly To The Floor. This Concerns A 2002fordescape With 10,700 Miles On It. I Was Traveling Down A Very Slight Grade At Less Than 20 Mph On A Clear Day Approaching A Red Light At An Intersection. When I Applied The Brakes, The Car Did Not Stop. Instead, The Front Of The Car Just Started To Uncontrollably Jump, Bounce And Hop Up And Down. Since The Car Did Not Slow Down, I Applied The Brakes Again And It Continued To Uncontrollably Bounce Up And Down. There Was A Car Crossing Through The Intersection In Front Of Me Driven By A Mother With Her Young Child In The Car. In Order To Avoid Hitting That Car, I Steered My Bouncing Car To The Right, Off The Road, And Into A Light Pole To Stop It. The Mother With Her 5 Year Old Daughter, Who Witnessed The Whole Event, Pulled Over To See If I Was Ok And Thanked Me For Not Killing Them. I Have Her Name And Number. A Police Report Was Filed. My Car Had Been Parked For Hours And All Of Sudden The Alarm Started Going Off. I Went Outside To Get It To Go Off And Realized There Was Smoke Coming Out From Under The Hood. 2002 fordescape. Consumer Writes In Regards To Abs Recall Notice. *smd The Consumer Took His Daughters Vehicle To The Dealer, After Receiving A Recall Notice In The Mail. The Consumer Informed The service Advisor, The Abs Light Had Been Coming On And Going Off For A While. Upon The Return Of The Vehicle, The Abs Light Was On Continuously. The Consumer Returned To The service Desk And Reported The Issue And He Was Informed He Could Leave The Vehicle For Diagnosis, But There Would Be A Fee Of $ 130.00. The Consumer Refused And Then Took The Vehicle To A Local Repair Shop. The Local Repair Shop Informed The Consumer, The Problem They Were Encountering Was An Abs Code B1676 Which Was A Result Of No Electrical Power To The Abs Module. The Repair Shop Stated, Because The Light Would No Longer Go Out, That The Current Situation Was Caused By Performing The Work On The Recall. They Also Explained, That The Recall That Was Performed Was To Add Power To The Junction Block To Supply Electricity To The Abs Module In Such A Way The Vehicle Would Not Catch Fire, And That Power Was Not Being Supplied To Two Of The Wires At All. The Repair Shop Discovered There Were Two Incorrect Splices Performed At The Dealer. Apparently, There Were Two Splices That Should Have Been Made And The Mechanic Only Put A Heat-shrink Tape On The Connection And Did Not Electrically Connect The Wires. After The Repair Of The Two Splices, The Shop Found That One Of The Two Wires Supplying Power To The Abs Module Still Only Had Three Volts At One Of The Connectors. The Shop Found Additional Recalls As Well. After Inspecting The Harness Per The Recall Notice, He Found The Insulation On Some Of The Wires Damaged And One Of The Wires Was Corroded Internally Causing The Low Voltage Problem. He Also Noted That The Inspection Cover On The Connector Had Been Removed For Inspection And The Master Cylinder Cap Looked Newer And Not The Original. Additionally, When He Removed The Connector From The Abs Unit, There Was No Grease Applied In The Cavity Like The Recall Instructed.

Accident Occurred In The Afternoon Of August 28th, 1999 In Durham, North Carolina. The Accident Involved My Vehicle Hitting A Vehicle In Front Of Me (i Was Travelling At About 35-45 Mph And Reached An Intersection Where Traffic Was Stopped For The Light. After Taking It To A Firestone Dealer They Informed Me That My Tread Had ‘separated’ And Told Me The Only Solution Was To Buy New Tires. Complete Brake Failure Occurred When Backing Out Of Parking Slot. Was Able To Stop Vehicle With The Parking Brake. Failure Of Brake Pipe, Due To Corrosion, Just Forward Of Rear Axle. The Two Pipes From The Junction Block At The Differential Also Badly Corroded But Not Leaking. Changed These Also As A Precaution. Total Loss Of Braking Power Was Unexpected Since I Believed That There Was A Diagonal Brake Systen Or Other Backup. In Attempting To Pump The Brake Once I Stoped All I Successed In Doing Was Pumping Brake Fluid On The Ground.
